People serving time in custody are often going through the most challenging and stressful periods in their lives. Prison is not an easy environment to live in, and feelings of isolation, loneliness and disconnect from loved ones are very common.
People distance themselves from their significant others for a whole host of reasons; some feel guilty about being incarcerated and want to shelter those they love; for others, they find keeping in touch with their loved ones too painful and upsetting, and the contact they do have only reminds them of their separation; and for some, the offence they committed means that they are no longer allowed to be in touch with those nearest to them.
